Getting a Mouth Guard for Braces

If you have braces, wearing a mouth guard during sports is important so that they don't get damaged. Damaged braces can cause damage to teeth, and they can also cause treatment setbacks. Our North York dentists offer custom-made mouth guards for their patients with braces.

Getting braces requires all sorts of lifestyle changes, from getting used to simply having them in your mouth, to the various eating restrictions and additional cleaning requirements.

If you play sports, you must also take care to protect your braces during games, so they don't get damaged. And that means wearing a mouth guard.

A mouth guard will not only protect the orthodontic appliance from damage, it will also protect the teeth and the whole mouth from being damaged by the braces when they athlete receives a blow to the face or head.

We also recommend mouth guards for our athletic patients who do not wear braces, because impact to the face, head or neck can cause oral damage even without them. But having a mouth full of sharp metal and wires creates an additional risk.

Do I need a special mouth guard just for braces?

There are two main types of mouth guards: Custom-made mouth guards and off-the-shelf ones. Either type can be worn with or without braces, but there are some important factors to take into consideration before making a choice.

Off the shelf mouth guards are less expensive than custom-made ones. If you choose this route, go for a boil and bite mouth guard that can be warmed up with hot water and molded to the teeth. There are other types of off-the-shelf guards that aren't as malleable, and the fit of these is therefore extremely poor. And Poor fit means poor protection. boil and bite guards offer a better fit, but are ultimately still generic, and won't ever fit your mouth perfectly.

Our North York dentists typically recommend custom-made mouth guards because they are molded specifically to fit your mouth, teeth and braces. The downside of these is that they are more expensive that off-the-shelf mouth guard, but in terms of comfort and protection, they're certainly worth the price.

How are custom mouth guards made?

At Sheppard Yorkland Dental, our dentists make mouth guards for our North York Patients. We start by taking a mold of the teeth. Because we use this mold to make the mouth guard, it will fit in your mouth perfectly, providing great protection during sports. The structure of the mouth guard is made by layering superheated plastic to the mould, and is then cooled to create the mouth guard.

Overall, custom made mouth guards fit extremely well, making them the best choice for protection. They're also extremely comfortable to wear, and don't restrict breathing.
