How often should I visit my dentist? What will happen if I don’t?

You should visit the dentist often enough that any developing dental health issues can be caught in their earliest stages. Here, our North York dentists explain why this is so important.

The goal, when it comes to scheduling regular and frequent dental exams and cleanings, is to catch and treat small or developing problems early.

Dental health problems like cavities, gum disease, and even irregularities like cysts and tumors, may not be obvious to the untrained eye in their early stages, since they may not present symptoms straight away.

Your dentist, however, knows exactly what to look for, and has the tools and expertise necessary to identify these problems early on, and to treat them before they become serious.

As you can probably imagine, dealing with dental problems before they become serious means that they'll cause less damage, and your treatment will be less invasive. For example, a small dental filling to repair decay on the surface of your tooth is far less invasive than the root canal you might need if the decay affects the interior of your tooth.

In addition, oral cancers are far more treatable, and have a much better prognosis, if identified and treated early.

How often should I visit the dentist?

The frequency with which you visit the dentist depends on your specific oral health needs. While some people can get away with visiting once or twice a year, others need to visit more frequently.

For most patients, however, our North York dentists recommend visiting the dentist for an exam and cleaning every six months or so.

Your dentist will help you determine how many visits a year are right for you. Contact our North York dental office today to book a consultation.
