One of the benefits of Invisalign clear, removable aligners is that you don't need to wear them all the time. Here, our North York dentists share how many hours you should wear them and why.
The entire length of your Invisalign treatment will depend on how misaligned your teeth are and how long you leave your aligners in each day. The only way to know for sure is to visit your dentist.
How many hours per day should Invisalign be worn?
Regardless of your treatment length, Invisalign aligners should be worn between 20 to 22 hours per day. Essentially, they should remain in your mouth as much as possible for the treatment to be effective.
That being said, aligners can be temporarily removed when eating, brushing, and flossing. Unlike traditional braces, you are not limited to what you can eat as long as you remove them first.
How long do I have to wear each aligner?
In most cases, an Invisalign aligner is worn for about a period of two weeks. The general idea is that you'll wear each set until your teeth fit fully into them comfortably and relatively loosely.
If this transition takes place in the expected two-week time frame, great, you can move ahead to using your next aligner. If not, then you'll need to wear them longer.
What if I don't wear my aligners for the recommended daily time?
While the freedom to take your aligners in and out is one of the reasons Invisalign is so popular, it’s critical not to abuse the privilege.
Leaving your Invisalign aligners out for too long will impact your treatment progress. The less you wear your aligners, the longer your Invisalign treatment will take.
Your treatment can't progress unless your aligners are worn, soo be sure to follow your dentist's instructions and attend your regular checkups to achieve a straighter smile.
