Invisalign clear aligners are removable, so there are no dietary restrictions. Simply remove them to eat and drink whatever you want, as long as you're sure to clean them before putting them back in and wear them for the recommended amount of time each day.
One of the main benefits of Invisalign is that it straightens your teeth without restricting your diet.
Unlike traditional braces that have a lot of restrictions (because of brackets and wires and food getting stuck between them), Invisalign can be removed so you are free to continue to eat and drink all the things you love.
Here, our North York dentists answer some frequently asked questions about eating with Invisalign.
Can I eat or drink anything with them in?
You can only drink cold water with your Invisalign aligners. You should never eat any foods or drinks other than water with them in your mouth.
Drinking sugary or dark drinks while wearing your aligners can lead to plaque build up. Hot beverages like coffee and tea can warp, stain or discolour your aligners.
Do I have to brush my teeth before I put my aligners back in?
Yes! You never want to eat and then put your aligners back in without cleaning your teeth. Food particles can get trapped between your teeth and your Invisalign aligners, which can be damaging and cause tooth decay.
If you are unable to properly brush after you eat or drink, it’s best to at least rinse your mouth and your aligners with water before putting them back in.
How soon after eating should I put my aligners back in?
Invisalign aligners should be worn between 20 to 22 hours per day so you'll want to be mindful of the total time you remove them each day. The idea is to keep them in your mouth as much as possible to see the best results.
Remember: You can remove the aligners when eating, drinking, brushing, and flossing, but try not to overdo it and be sure to get at least 20 hours of daily wearing time in!
